LANA YUTSKAYAAs a first-generation American, Lana grew up with "no Jewish education at all." But her parents "always emphasized that we were Jewish," so when she heard about RAJE from a friend, she was very interested."I was interested to learn more about my heritage, to make more Jewish friends and to go to Israel!

At RAJE, she found the missing link in her Jewish identity. "The classes were very inspiring. I made great connections with the staff, celebrated Shabbat and made some really amazing friends." Lana was so moved by the experience and the people, that following a RAJE trip to Israel, she decided to extend her trip for more than a month to study her Jewish heritage full time. "Before, I was aware that I was Jewish, but now I am always looking to learn more about what that means. I'm trying to live a more Jewish life, one that reflects my heritage."

Even beyond her personal growth, Lana has used the education and inspiration she accessed through RAJE to help other Russian Jews in her community by pursuing a career in social work. She now works full time at Shorefront Y. "I work with children and adults with special needs and developmental delays." Lana tries to "embrace the Jewish traditions with them" by developing Jewish educational programming, especially around holiday times. Armed with passion, enthusiasm, and the education she received through RAJE, she is uniquely suited to fill this much-needed position in the Jewish community.
