One position will focus on economic security and the other position will focus on community development, transportation, and utilities.

As a Director for Government Relations you will be responsible for leading and motivating a functional issue team that is responsible for advocating AARP public policy issues pertaining to either community development issues such as transportation, housing, and energy related issues or economic security issues to include, but not limited to financial security issues around savings, insurance, retirement security, social security, labor, and consumer protection for older Americans at both the state and federal levels. Additionally, the individuals will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to move AARP’s public policy and advocacy agendas forward, integrating state and federal work, wherever possible. Collaborating to formulate integrated responses to cross-programmatic policy challenges and facilitating cross-training to ensure that staff have the issue knowledge (economic security or community development) and competencies to advocate at both the state and federal levels. Ensures full collaboration of issue team with other internal business units and with partners throughout AARP.
Requires: Bachelor’s degree in a related field required, Master’s degree preferred. A minimum of 8 years of related experience to include economic security/financial security issues or community development issues. Working knowledge of both state and federal issues. Experience working with public policy on these issues as it relates to aging. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment. Must have issues knowledge of relevant advocacy issues or campaigns. Demonstrated management ability as well as matrix management experience. Ability to build solid teams and mentor staff. Excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills are required. Ability to build solid relationships. Good political instincts and strategic thinking a must.
