Description:
Responsibilities: • Developing, fostering, and leveraging Association relationships with members of Congress and the Executive Branch.
• Communicating regularly with Members of Congress and the Executive Branch to enhance AARP visibility and to win Congressional and Administrative support for AARP positions.
• Representing AARP in Congress and the Executive Branch on relevant public policy issues in order to advance AARP policy priorities.
• Developing, implementing, and reassessing lobbying strategies.
• Negotiating on behalf of AARP with Congressional and Administration staffs regarding the content of legislation and regulations.
• Working with state offices in managing ongoing relationships with State Legislatures, Governors, Attorneys General, and other elected and appointed state leaders.
• Shaping public opinion about public policy issues that affect mid-life and older persons by serving as a spokesperson for AARP in a wide range of public forums.
• Advising AARP leaders in the development and implementation of AARP public policy. Reports to the Director of his/her respective issue team.
Requires:
• BS/BA in a related field
• 6 years of related experience in legislative/regulatory capacity/lobbying.
• Extensive experience in the preparation and presentation of policy positions (issues briefs, testimony, etc.).
• Ability to analyze legislation and regulations thoroughly and effectively and to apply research results to justify or support Association policies and positions.
• Demonstrated ability to adhere to specific guidelines for developing and implementing integrated issue campaigns to achieve organizational goals, emphasizing teamwork throughout.
• Strong written and oral communication skills required. Prior Hill experience a plus.
• Up to 30% travel may be required.
